The Tamale Festival will once again pack quite a punch as boxers from across the state and the nation will converge on the city park for an event that will last throughout Saturday afternoon.
The Lumberjacks Boxing Club’s Second Annual Tamale Festival Boxing Show will feature 25 bouts, which will take place from approximately noon-5 p.m. There will be boxers from Houston, Port Arthur, San Antonio, Longview, Troup, Angleton, Carthage, Arkansas and Louisiana.
They will take on each other as well as boxers from Diboll and Lufkin.
“This is my third show to put on here in Diboll and I really enjoy bringing boxing to the Diboll fans,” Lumberjacks Boxing Club trainer Ismael Terrazas said. “This year, we’re giving out our biggest prize we’ve ever given, a customized championship belt with our gym logo on it. The City of Diboll helped us out with the cost to put on this show.”
The event is the first one to be held in Diboll since October’s Battle in the Piney Woods. In that event, there were 35 matches, including six by members of the Lumberjacks’ Boxing Club.
Diboll came up with four wins in those matches and also had strong showings in the other two matches.
This year there will be eight boxers from the Diboll gym. Those competing will be Luis Santana (8), Jayden Watson (8), Joseph Terrazas (9), Christian Terrazas (12), Xavier Lopez (13), Aaron Terrazas (15), Jose Calamaco (19) and Hector Morales (25).
Aaron Terrazas, Lopez and Morales won matches the last time an event was held in Diboll.
“It’s exciting to be able to have an event like this in Diboll,” Ismael Terrazas said. “Our fighters enjoy having this here instead of having to go on the road.”
The event is free for the community and weigh-ins will be from 9-11 a.m. The show will then kick off at noon with 25 fights planned throughout the afternoon.
Competitors are between 8-30 years of age.
Fans are welcome to view the exciting action throughout the Tamale Festival.
