Jesus, thank you for paying the price for our sins
Today is Palm Sunday (March 24)! The Bible tells us Jesus rode into the city on a donkey. As he entered the city, people shouted, “Hosanna! Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord!” People waved and laid palm branches down. Some even laid down their robes in front of his path. People were happy, celebrating, and joyful and treated Jesus with honor. Today, the Sunday before Easter, we remember these events. The children waved palm branches and marched around the sanctuary to commemorate the coming of Christ into Jerusalem! Hosanna!
Palm Sunday marks the beginning of Holy week. It is an exciting time for us as we get ready to celebrate the resurrection and triumph over death and sin. This is also the last week of Lent and the week prior to Easter. Holy week includes: Palm Sunday, Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, and Easter Sunday. It is also a week of sadness as we remember how Jesus paid the ultimate price for our sins by suffering and dying on the cross.
The youth and YUMYs of FUMC marched around waving palm branches to commemorate the coming of Jesus. Maundy Thursday is the Thursday before Easter and the commemoration of the Last Supper. Our church will celebrate Maundy Thursday on March 28th at Burke United Methodist Church at 8:00pm. Good Friday is the Friday before Easter. We will celebrate Good Friday Service on Friday, March 29th at FUMC at 6:00pm. Join us for a time of reflection, communion, and remembrance.
We remember the loving meal between friends. We remember the bread, how he served and said, “This is my body, broken and shed for you.” We remember the cup. We remember how he served it and said, “This is my blood, shed for you.” We remember the betrayal of Judas his trusted friend and the arrest of our Lord and Savior.
We remember the beatings, the torture, his suffering, and pain. We remember the same people who had shouted “Hosanna” turned on Jesus and began to shout “Crucify him!” Then we remember Jesus carrying the cross, him stumbling and falling at the weight and the severity of his injuries. We remember the nails, long, hard, and unforgiving. We remember the pounding, pounding, pounding of them going into his flesh and breaking his bones.
We remember the weight. The weight of the world on his shoulders as people continued to ridicule him, mock him, and despise him. We remember the pain. How he cried, suffered, and agonized for each of us – taking on our pain…in our place while paying the ultimate price.
We remember death. We remember his last breath, him crying out to God, then “it is finished.” This is our time to remember the ultimate price for us, our sin – the price was paid in full.
These events are sad – full of pain, sadness, and suffering, however, there is one more aspect we MUST remember. We remember LOVE -the love of God for humanity. “For God so loved the world, he sent his only begotten Son, that whosoever believes in him, shall not perish, but have eternal life.” John 3:16 God loves us so much, he doesn’t want us to suffer and die for our sinful human nature. He wants us to have the opportunity to have eternal life. He wants to give us a way out – to escape the damnation of sin. He wants us to have eternity in Heaven with Him. God gave us a life saver. He sent Jesus. Jesus died and suffered so we don’t have to.
So, how are you? Are you filled with suffering, pain, and sin? Do you need a way out? Do you feel betrayed? Do you feel hopeless, sad, and alone? Take some time. Sit in the quiet and think. Think about the events listed above. Who loved you so much? Who suffered for you? Who took your place? The answer is Jesus! He can enter your life – if you let him. He can fill every void you feel. He is our Savior and can be a life saver! If you want to feel fulfilled, saved, loved, and forgiven, pray this simple prayer.
Dear Jesus, Thank you for paying the price for my sins. I want you to come into my heart and be my Lord and Savior. Lead my life and help me live the way you want me to. Forgive me for my numerous sins. I am not worthy of your love, but you love me anyway. Thank you for paying the ultimate price for a sinner like me. AMEN Now friend, if you prayed that simple prayer, you have become a friend in Jesus. You have made the friend that will never leave. Congratulations. You have joined the family of God! As we wait for the resurrection and triumph of Easter Sunday, share what you now know with others. Lead others to Christ. Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord! Hosanna!
