Lopez headed back to state CC meet
Hector Lopez finished third in the Region III-3A cross country meet Saturday in Humble, qualifying for the state meet in the process.
Lopez finished the 5,000-meter (3.1-mile) course in 16 minutes, 50.2 seconds – 17 seconds behind district-rival Sam Farrell of Hudson, who won the race in 16:33.1 to lead his team to its eighth consecutive regional championship and a berth in the state meet.
Diboll took seventh as a team. Other Diboll runners were: Andrew Hernandez, 17:26.4, 13th; Stephen Badeaux, 18:31.1, 48th; Caleb Stewart, 19:05.4, 67th; Leonides Rodriguez, 19:12.1, 75th; Aaron Cantu, 21:06.1, 127th.
“At the beginning of the summer the (Lumberjack) team made it a goal to be state-qualifiers. Although they finished short of the goal, I could not be more proud of what they accomplished,” said Gerardo Moreno, Diboll cross country coach. “Last year at Region they finished 11th as a team and averaged a finishing time of 19:15. This year they average 18:13 and finished seventhth.”
The Central Bulldogs placed fourth as a team, with Jonathan Carillo qualifying for state with a 10th-place finish.
Lopez will compete in the state meet at 11:10 a.m. Saturday in Round Rock.
