Martel selected for Region III waiver board

Diboll ISD Superintendent Gary Martel was elected as the Class 4A-Region III representative on the UIL Waiver Review Board. His term will begin July 1 and expire June 2018.
The Waiver Review Board reviews decisions of the UIL waiver officer when an appeal of a waiver decision is filed.
The waiver process is designed to give an opportunity to students who encounter hardships due to extenuating, life-changing circumstances.  With this process in place, students who normally would be ineligible to participate in varsity contests, due to these involuntary or unavoidable circumstances, now are able to seek eligibility through one of the various waivers.  The waivers that are available are: Four-Year, Parent Residence, Foreign Exchange, Retroactive, Middle School Over-Age, and High School Over-Age.
“Being selected by my peers was an honor because I know this particular appointment is one that requires tough decisions concerning school children in Texas,” Martel said. “I plan to uphold the integrity of past members and the UIL governing body. I’m proud to represent Diboll ISD.”
The Waiver Review Board consists of nine people. Five members are elected — one from each conference — and four members are appointed by the chair of the Legislative Council. The selection of appointed members reflects sensitivity to ethnicity, gender and student population size of districts.  Each elected member serves a four-year term.
